HITCH-HIKING
“…highway was awash with flood water…”
Hello there! Before we went to your part of the world from the U.K., we had this belief that the Northern Territory was as hot as hell and that some people died out in the bush from dehydration when they became lost. Well, that wasn’t our experience at all, and it just goes to show that no one should have preconceived ideas about anything. My partner and I hitch-hiked with back-packs from Alice Springs to Darwin. It wasn’t at all hot. It was cold and raining.

The sky was full of electrical storms with lightning flashing every few seconds. The highway was awash with flood water, sometimes up to our knees. Much of the time we huddled under a sheet of plastic beside the road, praying for a car or truck to rescue us before we drowned. Now, every time we see pictures of a sunny Alice Springs, we laugh – ironically, of course!
