POMMY
“…you used the word ‘pommy’…”
From L. W., Worcestershire, England: “I noticed you used the word ‘pommy’ in a story, meaning an English person. I have often wondered about the origins of this word and whether or not itis affectionate or negative …”REPLY: Depends on the tone of voice used. It can be either. The word, they say, originated back in the old pioneering days when people were transported from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland as so-called ‘convicts.’ Printed on to their clothing was P.O.M.E., signifying ‘Prisoner Of Mother England.’ As a consequence, the slang term ‘pommy’ evolved.
