STRANGE EVENTS
“…mad camel races…”
Sir,
When we were back-packing in Australia last year, we noticed there were a lot of strange events that were organised in different places for amusements. For instance, the Henley-On-Todd “boat” race in the dry bed of the Todd River, in Alice Springs. The locals build boats with no bottoms and the crew pick up the boat and race other boats along the sandy river bed. Also in Alice Springs they have mad camel races and there’s an Alice Springs Fishing Club (in a place where the river is usually waterless!)
In other places, they hold gumboot throwing competitions, or dried cattle turds. Also cockroach and frog races. Very strange goings-on, I must say.
